1 Supports “Rotarians Against Hunger”
Over 120 volunteers from the six Rotary Clubs in Area 1 (Clark County, Frederick
County, Front Royal, Linden, Winchester’s Latest, Winchester) met at the Leslie
Fox Keyser Elementary School in Front Royal on Saturday morning, February 5th
to package meals for “Rotarians Against Hunger” supporting the "Stop
Hunger Now" program. The Rotary
Clubs were joined by Interact students from Clarke County HS, Millbrook HS,
Sherando HS, Warren County HS, Handley HS, Skyline HS, Riverfront
Christian.
This is the second year that the Area 1 Rotary and Interact Clubs have come
together to raise funds and package food to support “Stop Hunger Now”. This program started in 2010 with a District
7570 Matching Grant of $2,000.00 with clubs raising an additional $7,082.00, resulting
in over 36,000 meals being packaged. In
2011, Area 1 Rotary and Interact Clubs raised approximately $6,400.00,
resulting in approximately 24,000 meals being packaged. The two year total exceeds 60,000 meals for
children.
It only took the volunteers a little over two hours to package the
meals. The meals from this “packaging
party” are being sent to Zambia to provide meals for children, which for many, will
be the only meal they receive that day.
“Stop Hunger Now” is an international hunger relief organization that
coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the
world. The organization is driven by a vision to end world hunger in our
lifetime and a mission to provide food and life-saving aid to the world’s most
destitute and hungry in the most sustainable, efficient and effective manner. This organization, headquartered in North
Carolina with centers in Virginia, is supported by many Rotary Clubs around the
south.
This year’s Area 1 Service Project was coordinated by Linden Club President,
Dave Hardy. President Dave said,
"This is a great project to involve all our Rotary Clubs, Interact Clubs,
family and friends of Area 1. This
project meets all the characteristics of a great service project: it’s easy to organize, it involves most of a
club’s members, it is easy to fund, and it supports Rotary International’s
fight against hunger by providing a huge benefit from a small investment”.
